The Iron and Steel Museum of Alabama
The Iron and Steel Museum of Alabama tells the story of the Roupes Valley (Tannehill) Ironworks. From its beginning as a simple creek side forge, the Tannehill Ironworks expanded into a battery of three important blast furnaces. Learn how Alabama became the arsenal of the Confederacy during the Civil War, and see how that legacy spurred the later iron and steel boom in Birmingham.
Exhibits include the tools and machines used in 19th century iron making, a large collection of Confederate ordnance and artifacts from the Civil War, parts of the original Six Mile Bloomery Forge, and a steam powered, belt-driven 1880s machine shop.
Museum Hours:
9:00 – 4:00 Thursday through Sunday
